My engagement with the Carnegie Mellon International Film Festival (CMU IFF) began in the bustling cultural landscape of Pittsburgh, marking a pivotal chapter in my professional development. Starting as a Marketing & Communication Intern in October 2022, I embarked on a journey that would not only deepen my appreciation for global cinema but also significantly enhance my skills in arts management. This role set the stage for my eventual progression to Vice President & Finance, allowing me to contribute to the festival’s growth and success from multiple dimensions.
Marketing & Communication Intern: Establishing a Vision
In the role of Marketing & Communication Intern, I focused on broadening the festival’s reach and strengthening its brand. A key initiative was forging strategic partnerships, notably with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, which expanded our marketing capabilities and sponsorship opportunities. This effort was instrumental in increasing the festival’s attendance by 20%.
A highlight of my tenure in this role was leading a project for the 2023 Pittsburgh Humanity Festival Open Call. This ambitious project involved assembling a team to create a documentary-styled interview, showcasing the festival’s impact. From drafting the concept and filming in-depth interviews to overseeing the editing process, I guided the team through each phase, ensuring our narrative was compelling and authentic. This project not only reached the final round of the open call but also exemplified our team’s ability to produce impactful visual content, underscoring the power of storytelling in cultural promotion.
Vice President & Finance: Expanding Impact
Advancing to Vice President & Finance, I assumed a critical role in securing the festival’s financial stability and operational efficiency. Managing a budget that attracted over $15,000 in funding, I was responsible for the meticulous oversight of financial operations, including budgeting, licensing, and vendor negotiations. My efforts ensured that the festival not only met its financial goals but also enhanced its operational workflows through the introduction of a systematic checklist for event logistics.
Reflections and Future Directions
My journey with CMU IFF has been a transformative experience, enriching my understanding of the intricacies of film festival management and the broader arts sector. Leading the documentary project as a Marketing & Communication Intern taught me the importance of narrative in engaging audiences, while my role as Vice President & Finance honed my skills in financial oversight and strategic planning.
Looking forward, I am eager to leverage these experiences in future arts and entertainment projects. The skills and insights gained from my time with CMU IFF have equipped me with a comprehensive toolkit to navigate the challenges of the arts management field, driving innovation and impact in my future endeavors.
